In 2011, the Turkish company StandartBio proposed a large-scale modernization program for outdated M60 tanks. The program was called the Affordable Main Battle Tank (AMBT) and was aimed to increase combat effectiveness of M60 tanks to a level roughly equivalent to modern main battle tanks. The main changes of this modernization were a new 1200 hp diesel engine, a modern fire control system with a ballistic computer and independent stabilization of the aiming line through a digital gunner’s sight, as well as a new smooth-bore M256 120-mm gun. The tank’s protection also increased slightly by installing solid hull side screens and tower slat screens. In addition, the tank received an electric turret drive, new surveillance optics, and a 25-mm automatic cannon in the commander’s turret. The AMBT modernization program was designed entirely for foreign operators of the M60 from several countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
In War Thunder, the M60 AMBT will be the main prize in the new season of the World War. M60 AMBT will join the ranks of the modernized M60 in the game and will become the most advanced modification of this tank. By some parameters, the tank came close to the top-tier MBTs - it has the same gun as the M1A1 Abrams, a new powerful diesel engine makes the tank noticeably more agile and fast, the tower’s electric drive and stabilizer allow shooting on the move at short and medium distances. The tank's protection, although improved compared to the base M60, is still inferior to most MBT of the VII rank. The tank does not have dynamic protection either, which means that you need to be careful about the impact of ATGMs and chemical energy tank shells, especially in the hull.
IL-2 (M-82) (Premium Aircraft)
In early July of 1941, due to the rapid advance of German troops into central Russia, there was a threat of a reduction in the supply of IL-2 AM-38 aircraft engines. Anticipating possible issues, Sergey Ilyushin suggested adapting the Sturmovik engine to the more common M-82 engine to the Soviet military aviation authorities. In a very short time, the aircraft engineers in the Ilyushin design bureau built a prototype attacker aircraft for testing with the new engine. The prototype also featured a much anticipated defensive turret with a position for an air gunner, the need for which became evident after the first IL-2 sorties in WWII. Unlike the production version, the IL-2 with the M-82 engine did not have engine compartment protection - the armored capsule was shortened and ended with an armored plate between the pilot and the engine. The new engine also required the installation of an updated propeller. The gunner’s seat was positioned to the rear of the cockpit, where a blister turret with a 12.7mm UBT machine gun with armored glass was located. Tests of the new version of the attack aircraft demonstrated that such a design does not have critical problems despite its inferior speed to the regular IL-2. By the spring of 1942, a prototype with the M-82IR engine appeared, which was better suited for low altitudes, from which the attack aircraft was operating most of the time. Flight characteristics have been improved, but by that time the production of native AM-38 engines was normal and there was no need to modify the IL-2 with M-82 engines any more.
In a word, Ilyushin’s experimental attack aircraft is an excellent prize for World War II enthusiasts who will get the most stubborn and skillful fighters. Go for it!
Note! The War Thunder - Haida Pack will be discontinued after the sale.
At the beginning of July, a new season of World War mode is coming to War Thunder! We’ve already talked about the new scenarios being introduced in it, but there are other awesome additions that are coming as well. We are happy to reveal the details of the improved interface, new game mechanics, and changes to the level of difficulty in the upcoming World War season “Road to the West”!
No markers, and instead, new technologies. Modern combat equipment features advanced systems for acquiring and locking on a target. Use them all to gain superiority in battle! Don’t forget to bind keys for the effective features of your vehicle, or use a multifunctional menu.
Improving the interface
These are the first steps towards making the World War interface easy and fun to use both for soldiers and squadron leaders. In the next season, we are going to work on the joining of available battles. Thank you for your feedback and suggestions!
New army type: Helicopters
It’s hover time! Helicopters have become their own separate army in World War mode, getting their own structure, missions, and unique features!
Squadron commanders can send helicopters as reinforcements to ground army battles. Helicopters in ground battles will have helipads where field service can be done.
They can also be used by the commander to quickly move an infantry army to the enemy’s rear, or in any other important direction!
You can find more information about the new army for commanders here:
Helicopters - an independent army that is based on, and can only use, helipads. At any given time during air battles, the operation map can only have up to 2 helicopter armies and up to 4 aircraft armies.
The helicopter army has a unique ability - it can take infantry army units aboard and transport them around the operation map.
The loss of a helicopter army upon which infantry army units had boarded will also lead to the loss of the infantry army’s forces in proportion to the amount of helicopters that were shot down, so be careful!
A helicopter army can be joined to a ground battle and by doing so, the helicopter army will not take the aircraft slot in that battle. Therefore, the aircraft army will also be able to join the battle.
Types of missions that arise where a helicopter army attacks a ground army are identical to those created for assault or bomber aircraft when attacking a ground army.
We continue preparation for the new World War mode season and provide you with information that can help you in advance to prepare the vehicles used in the battles scheduled to start in July! You already know about the scenario “Battle for the Fulda Gap” and now we would like to talk about a real major tank battle that took place in post WW2 history.
World War mode in War Thunder is represented by Seasons that include various scenarios, years of operations, available vehicles and theatres of war. The squadrons and players that take part in battles and Operations will receive (besides the usual battle rewards) special prizes for participation, and the best squadrons and players will receive special valuable prizes after the results of the day and the Season - they are unique for each Season. Historical scenario: Battle of the Chinese Farm
On the 6th of October 1973, Israel was attacked by a coalition of Arab States. The unexpected attack had some short-term success, on the third day the Israel Defense Forces knocked the enemy out of the strategically important Golan Heights and moved towards a counteroffensive that pushed the aggressors to the Suez Canal.
Although the debut of modern M60A1 tanks and confident Israeli actions helped to turn the tide of the war, the short front line was a big problem for both sides in the conflict. Battles in the “Doomsday War” were conducted from a minimum distance and with the participation of a large number of soldiers.
On the 17th of October during the counter-offensive, Israeli forces crossed the Suez Canal and secured themselves on its west bank. Egyptian commanders began a counterattack in the agricultural farm area which the Israelis had marked on their maps as a "Chinese farm" because of the hieroglyphs on purchased Japanese units. In the war which lasted just over two weeks, this was a battle that went down in history as the most massive tank battle since WW2.
